Furniture Family Addition

Since we moved into our current home, over 3 years ago, our front living room has had only a single couch to sit on, and no chairs to speak of.  As you can imagine, this has been quite the inconvenience.

Any time someone came over for a quick visit or a casual chat, we were stuck sitting right next to each other instead of a comfortable face to face, but not in your face position.

For the longest time I wasn't even thinking about the living room and it's someday decor, so the purchase of chairs was sent to the back burner. Of course, I would occasionally troll craigslist, but never really found anything that spoke to me.

When I finally started putting a little brain power into how I wanted the space to look I got an idea in my head of what I wanted.

It took about a year of casually searching, but I finally found what I was looking for, and then some.

While perusing craigslist one day I came upon some chairs, and it was like the heavens opened and the angels were singing.

I called right away and the next day, they were MINE!

They are the right size, shape, and have the right amount of uniqueness to them.  I love that they already have casters, however, some of us (us being my husband) do not share the same opinion on that.  Nevertheless, they will stay.

I also love the nail head trim on the front of the chairs.

You can see that the legs need a little touching up, but thankfully it doesn't look to be a big messy job.

The back legs of the chairs have this great gentle curve to them which adds to the uniqueness and appeal.  The backs are nice and low so they don't cause much of a view obstruction into the rest of the room.

They are actually quite comfortable with their rounded backs.  In the future they could probably use new foam in the seat though.

And the bonus?  They happen to already match my rug.  I am planning on reupholstering these in the future, but for now they can lovingly blend in with the rest of the decor.  I'm even thinking about giving them a good once over with a cleaner to get rid of the dinge and bring out the color a bit more.

I'm glad that I can chat with someone comfortably now, without feeling like I am sitting in their lap. That was rather awkward after all.

Hi! I just came across this post. I feel this type of chair would be perfect in my small living room as well. Do you know what kind of style this is called? I'd think 1970s era? NO clue. Thanks!

Hi Tiffany,

I don't know if this kind of chair has a specific category it fits into but you can search for mid-century barrel chair and find a lot of similar styles. I think the era may be back to the 50's. My best suggestion would be to look on places like craigslist and at local vintage/antique stores.
